Joe Reed was sired by Joe Blair who has some of the fastest Thoroughbred blood in the world. His dam was the Grande Dame of the Quarter Horse world, Della Moore. Joe Reed was conceived without the knowledge of Della Moore's owner.

Joe Reed has sired Joe Reed II, Joe Darter, Little Fanny, Two Timer, Sue Reed, Catachu, Red Joe of Arizona, Ann Burnett, Hi-Tone, Reed McCue, Joe Sunday, Joe Bob, Jim Reed, Little Abner McCue, and Betty Wood.

Joe Reed and his sons have contributed much to the Quarter Horse, and their descendants are noted for their speed, their good heads, and their stylishness.
